"Today's gardening trend is history repeating itself. In 1943, Americans planted 20.5 million gardens, and the harvest accounted for nearly one-third of all the vegetables consumed in the country that year." ~June 2008 TIME Magazine

GROW is a long-term program developed by the Cincinnati Horticultural Society that addresses the current issues facing many individuals and families, such as healthy eating, economic changes, community involvement and environmental awareness. Participants will increase their knowledge of gardening and be able to appreciate how small changes in our behavior can have a significant effect on our overall wellbeing.

The goal of GROW is to have 5,000 individuals start vegetable gardens that will result in enough produce to provide fresh vegetables for at least 30 meals. By the end of the first harvest, we hope to have influenced our community to be more committed to nature, healthy eating and an active lifestyle. GROW reinforces the current values of consumers who would rather eat locally grown food because it tastes better, is healthier and curbs rising grocery costs, demonstrating how sustainable gardening and nutrition work hand in hand.

GROW will demonstrate the power of growing, preparing and sharing food, vividly illustrating the positive results of people working toward a common goal to grow healthy families and a healthier community. GROW is a long-term project that is a hands-on example of sustainability, reflecting society's recent change in values and lifestyle. Food for thought: If each person increased their container garden from one to four pots, the produce harvested will equal more than $584 worth of fresh vegetables grown in one summer.

Ultimately, our hope is that GROW will make a positive impact on the health and well-being of individuals through gardening.

"…the vegetables are awesome. It's a totally different flavor from what you buy in the store. It's exciting to prepare a meal from produce you grew in your own backyard."
