The 2008 Distinguished Lecture Series

Schedule for the 2009 Distinguished Lecture Series will be posted by February 2009.

A sterling line-up of distinguished national speakers is set for this year's Cincinnati Flower Show presented by National City. "We are so fortunate to be able to bring to Cincinnati the preeminent gardening and design experts in the country," said Mary Margaret Rochford, President of the Cincinnati Horticultural Society. "The ideas and techniques they share with audiences are truly cutting-edge, yet easy enough for anyone to implement at home."


Richard Tufnell
Mr. Tufnell is a Certified Dry Stone Craftsman and a world-renowned authority on dry stone construction. He is the Secretary to SPS, Europe and the co-founder of the Dry Stone Conservancy, Inc. in the United States. Although Mr. Tuffnell resides in Scotland, he has spent a significant amount of his time in the conservation effort for the preservation of stone dry wall construction projects in Kentucky and the rest of the US. He served as the Training and Restoration Project Director for the US National Park Service in five national parks. He has received countless awards for his work over the year throughout the world. Mr. Tufnell is the author of six books and over 72 journal articles on dry stone construction.

Brian Jorg
Presented the The Enquirer

EXPLORE the natural beauty of the garden in a new way. Brian Jorg, horticulturalist for the Cincinnati Zoo and a professional photographer shows visitors how to improve their digital photography skills with workshops and lectures. Cincinnati.com, GetPublished will sponsor the Garden Photo contest where amateur photographers can compete for prizes. Brian has traveled the world taking photos of rare plant species in their natural habitat. Monday, April 21. Workshops and lectures are free with Flower Show Admission. Space is limited, reservations required. Photo contest judges, Brian Jorg, staff from the Enquirer and Paula Norton of Paula Norton Photography.

Brian Jorg was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is currently Manager of Horticulture at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. Among his duties are working with rare and endangered plant material. Brian also leads tours on various topics including native wildflowers. Brian also appears regularly on radio and TV, promoting horticulture topics whenever he can. He also writes about the natural world in various print media. Brian is also a professional outdoor photographer. His images have been used in books, magazines, educational displays, greeting cards, and in prints. His favorite subjects include native wildflowers, birds, and wildlife.

Wes Cowan
Bring your treasures to the Flower Show and let Wes Cowan, featured appraiser on Antiques Roadshow, solve the mystery.

Wes Cowan is founder and owner of Cowan's Auctions, Inc. in Cincinnati, Ohio. An internationally recognized expert in Historic Americana, Wes stars in the PBS television series History Detectives and is a featured appraiser on Antiques Roadshow. He writes a bi-weekly antiques column for the Cincinnati Enquirer, monthly columns for Antique Week, Collectors News and the SE Antiquing Journal, and is a frequently requested speaker at antique events around the country. Wes is licensed as an auctioneer in Ohio and holds a BA and MA in anthropology from the University of Kentucky, and a PhD in anthropology from the University of Michigan. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Wes grew up in a household filled with Victorian antiques.

Cowan specializes in Historical America, American furniture, paintings, folk and decorative arts, and American Indian Art. He has helped individuals and institutions alike in developing collections for more than 10 years.

Greater Cincinnati Environmental Educators
The Cincinnati Flower Show is proud to introduce Project Learning Tree to this year's Lecture Series agenda. Project Learning Tree is an award-winning environmental education program designed for teachers and other educators, parents, and community leaders working with youth. Through hands-on, interdisciplinary activities, Project Learning Tree provides students with opportunities to investigate environmental issues and encourages them to make informed, responsible decision. The workshop activities look at environmental issues and horticulture such as plant growth, soil, decomposition, recycling, and of course, trees.

Presented by: Sue Magness, Hamilton County Environmental Services-Solid Waste Management District; Gwen Roth Hamilton County Soil and Water; Corina Bullock, Civic Garden Center of Greater Cincinnati; Tara Maddock, Mill Creak Watershed Council; and Barb Wriston-Ruddy, Keep Cincinnati Beautiful.

Bette Sherman
Bette Sherman as she takes a walk down memory lane, giving you a glimpse into the boudoirs and dressing tables of women from the past that wore the latest fashions.

Bette Sherman amusingly recognized as the "Queen of Stuff" has been a passionate collector of historic woman's fashion and vintage beauty products for nearly 30 years. Bette's passion for fashion history and collecting has taken her from tiny shops and prominent antique shows to flea markets and private homes throughout the United States and Europe. "It's my way of living it," Bette says. Her research and the building of her extensive cosmetic and perfume collection offer a glimpse into the boudoirs and dressing tables of women from the past who wore the latest fashions. Her collection contains: Victorian powders and homemade potions, face creams and rouges from budding cosmetic companies that catered to flappers of the Roaring 20's, pancake make-up and bizarre hair products from the golden era of Hollywood film stars and make-up artists. Bette enjoys sharing her collection, leaving audiences laughing and wanting a collection of their own.

Jon Carloftis- Dubbed the "Grand master of urban design" by Garden Design Magazine (March, 2008), Jon also has a lot of country in him. He grew up near Lexington, Kentucky. He has designed rooftops terraces and gardens for the rich and famous as well as for some friends in Covington. Jon's designs have appeared in Metropolitan Home, Garden Design, Southern Living, Country Home, Country Gardens and more. He is a consultant for HGTV and has been featured on Martha Stewart and Style TV.

Cheryl Wilks has been actively involved in the floral industry since 1980. She created "Flowers on Location" in 1994, specializing in recreational floral education for ALL ages & abilities (4 - 104). Cheryl brings hundreds of emotionally uplifting floral workshops and demonstrations each year to garden clubs, womens groups, corporate lunch & learns/team building, senior centers, nursing homes, retirement communities, childrens after-school/summer camps, spousal/kid programs for conventions and more! "Flower arranging is a wonderful activity that nurtures self-expression and self-esteem," Cheryl explains. "Flowers are the food for our soul."

Richard Louv
Richard Louv, author of seven books focused on family, nature and community, will make a special presentation at Small Wonders Weekend.

Richard Louv is chairman of the Children & Nature Network. His most recent book, "Last Child in the Woods: Saving our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder" has stimulated a national conversation about the future relationship between children and nature. Small Wonders Weekend was inspired by his book and a presentation he made in Cincinnati last spring. He makes the case for how important a sense o f "wonder" and curiosity are to the development of our children.

Zak Morgan
Grammy-nominated family entertainer Zak Morgan delights children and parents alike with his wonderful wordplay and his magical live performances. His love of reading and imagining and his motto, "I can do it" are contagious.

Zak's physical comedy is reminiscent of a young Steve Martin, and his writing is frequently characterized as a cross between Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein because of the fun he has with language. His trademark wit and wordplay permeate his music.
